From C-suite to ESG Solopreneur

In January 2021, I was the Chief Legal Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer at a global energy company. I spent my days on video calls dealing with dozens of issues - everything from managing the COVID-19 crisis to contract automation.

I started to feel exhausted, and I took a few days off to visit my family home on an island in the Pacific Northwest. While I was there, I thought about whether I was making a difference in the world and how I could have more impact.

That's when it hit me.

I had worked in a company that advised the Fortune 500 on carbon reduction for 8 years. As a C-suite executive, I had designed and implemented strategies to address climate, social issues, ethics, and corporate governance. I knew how to succeed in these areas.

So many in-house legal leaders were encountering ESG challenges for the first time. I had unique expertise that could help make it easier for them to succeed. I could make my expertise available to anyone on social media. This thought changed my life.

For two years, I shared everything I knew about ESG on LinkedIn. I received so many messages from in-house legal leaders thanking me for the guidance. This felt amazing, but after a while, I realized it wasn't enough to create the impact I wanted.

Receiving a post with insights on complex subjects like ESG is helpful. Even so, each industry and organization is unique. Many leaders still found it challenging to make real progress on ESG.That’s when I decided to take it a step further. I wanted to work directly with general counsel and other legal leaders on up-leveling their organization's ESG performance.

Whenever you are ready, I am here to help you start your ESG journey.

In the meantime, I will continue sharing my best advice on LinkedIn and in this newsletter.
